About packing
Pack your items with care, or let them be packed professionally
by movers.
Make a good selection of things that need to be moved.
Do not move things that you would have thrown away anyway.
Now is the time to start cleaning house and getting
rid of old belongings!
Packing Tips
- Keep the following supplies
and accessories on hand:
- Strong boxes, all sizes
- Bubble wrap or other cushioning
material such as old newspapers, sheets, blankets,
pillows and towels
- Marking pens
- Labels
- Tape measure
- Furniture pads or old blankets
- Packing tape and scissors
- Money and credit cards
- Label each box with the room
in the new home to which it should be delivered
- Number the boxes and keep
a list of what is in each box
- Clearly mark fragile items
- Pack a bag of personal items
you'll need during the move (change of clothes, toiletries,
medicine, maps, food,and
drinks). Keep it in an easy-to-find place when you
pack
- Keep a medical kit accessible
- If you have children, pack
a bag of games and activities for the trip.
Packing documents and personal items
The rule is simple: if it is personal, confidential
or has high value, pack it yourself and keep it with
you!
Keep your personal documents and items close
and do not let them be moved by movers.
This includes items like documents (ID's creditcards,
etc) but also address books, air line tickets, cameras,
check books, car keys, computer disks and software,
diaries, finacial files, jewelry, letters, medical records,
photos, etc.
Things NOT to pack
Flammable, corrosive and explosive items should
not be packed and will not be accepted by movers, such
as: Acid, Aerosols, (Car) Batteries, Ammunition,
Charcoal, Chemistry Sets, Cleaning Fluid, Fertilizer,
Fireworks, Gasoline Poisons, Kerosene, Lamp Oil, Lighter
Fluid, Liquid Bleach, Loaded Weapons, Matches, Motor
Oil, Nail Polish & Remover, Paints, Paint Thinner,
Pesticides, Propane Tanks, Weed Killer.
Anything that could explode or cause a
chemical reaction should NOT be packed.
Plants, food and animals
Many movers refuse to accept packed food, animals
or plants, but can make an exception when the move is
less than 150 miles and within a 24 hour drive away.
Ask your mover how exceptions are handled.
