About Ada - Ada is a city located in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,691. It is the county seat of Pontotoc County. Ada is also the birthplace of New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey and University of Oklahoma standout defensive end Dan Cody. Home to East Central University. Oklahoma country singer Jeremy Castle graduated from East Central University; country music's Blake Shelton is also from Ada. The city is named after Ada Reed, the daughter of the city's first postmaster, Jeff Reed. Ada is home to the Ada Cougars, one of very few high school football teams that can boast 19 state championships.

There are 6,697 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.6% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% are non-families. 37.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 17.5% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,977, and the median income for a family is $31,805. Males have a median income of $25,223 versus $17,688 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,666. 21.4% of the population and 14.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.8% of those under the age of 18 and 11.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
