The City of Jamestown is within the Town of Ellicott and is at the southern tip of Chautauqua Lake. To the west of the city is an area (Census Enumeration District) known as Jamestown West.

The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.3 males.
