U.S. state of New York. As of
2000, the population is 49,927. Its name derives from
a Delaware Indian word, applied by settlers of Western
New York State to a trail that followed the Allegany
(Allegheny) River. Its county seat is Belmont.
Allegany is also a town located in Cattaraugus County,
New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a
total population of 8,230. The Town of Allegany is on
the south border of the county, west of the City of
Olean. There is a village called
Allegany inside this town.
