People of Carlsbad - As of the census of 2005, there were 27,463 people, 10,154 households, and 7,429 families residing in the city. The population density was 348.7/km˛ (903.3/mi˛). There were 11,421 housing units at an average density of 155.4/km˛ (402.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city was 77.40% White, 2.20% African American, 1.25% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 15.84% from other races, and 2.52% from two or more races. 36.75% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 9,957 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 26.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,658, and the median income for a family was $35,640. Males had a median income of $31,214 versus $19,228 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,496. 16.5% of the population and 13.1% of families were below the poverty line. 21.4% of those under the age of 18 and 11.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
