The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who are 65 years of age or older. Taylorville is known to many as having a high rate of neuroblastoma, a cancer affecting the brain and striking children. The local power company was sued and lost for contaminating the groundwater in 1994.
