It is one of the larger suburbs on the San Francisco Peninsula, located between Burlingame to the north, Foster City to the East, and Belmont to the south. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 92,482.

The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 35.1% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older.
