- Oceanside is a city in northern San Diego County,
California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population
of 161,029. Together with Vista and Carlsbad, it makes
up the Tri-City area. The city is just south of Camp
Pendleton, the largest U.S. Marine Corps base in the
world. The city was first encountered by European explorers
in 1769 and was incorporated in 1888.

and 39,259 families residing in the city. The population

(1,467.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is
53.6% White, 5.9% African American, 0.4% Native American
or Alaskan Native, 5.4% Asian, 1.2% Pacific Islander,
.1% from another race alone, and 3.2% from two races.
30.2% of the population is Latino of any race. These
figures have been adjusted to include the percentages
of the population of a particular race, but not latino
in order for the percentages to add up to 100% whereas
the census does not differentiate latinos and therefore
the percentages add up to more than 100%.
The area around Oceanside High School was, along with
the neighborhood around San Diego High School, the site
of the first Samoan communities on the mainland.
There are 56,488 households out of which 35.0% have
children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1%
are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female
householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families.
22.7% of all households are made up of individuals and
10.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age
or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the
average family size is 3.33.
In the city the population is spread out with 27.6%
under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from
25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65
years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For
every 100 females there are 98.0 males. For every 100
females age 18 and over, there are 96.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $46,301,
and the median income for a family is $52,232. Males
have a median income of $34,772 versus $27,962 for females.
The per capita income for the city is $20,329. 11.6%
of the population and 8.2% of families are below the
poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.2% of
those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older
are living below the poverty line.
