In 1900, 2,573 people lived here; in 1910, 3,878; and in 1940, 5,422. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 18,986. The city is the county seat of Crawford County. Located near the junction of Interstate 40 and the Arkansas/Oklahoma border, Van Buren is known to many travellers as a welcomed rest stop.
