Mesa is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona.
It is the second largest city in the metropolitan area of Phoenix and the third
largest city in Arizona, after Phoenix and Tucson.
Mesa is one of the nation's fastest-growing cities. In 2004, the U.S. Census
Bureau estimated the city's at 437,454. It is the largest suburban city in the
United States and second largest in North America after Mississauga, Ontario.
Mesa has a larger population than St. Louis, Missouri; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Salt Lake City, Utah.
The city was founded in January 1878. Modern Mesa was founded by Mormon pioneers and its population is still roughly one-fourth Mormon. Mesa's residents exhibit
significant economic diversity, with low-income areas and mobile-home parks
coexisting with upscale areas featuring rather expensive homes.

There are 146,643 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.20.
In the city the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65
years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $42,817, and the median
income for a family is $49,232. Males have a median income of $35,960 versus
$27,005 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,601. 8.9% of
the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the
total population, 10.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.1% of those 65 and
older are living below the poverty line.
